Fostering with snakes or reptiles

Snakes insects and reptiles present unique risks which need to be taken in to consideration. A key question would be whether they are venomous or not. The keeping of venomous animals requires registration under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976, and any person granting the license will need to be involved in considering the compatibility with the role of foster caring.

Assessments would take into consideration the feeding arrangements for the animals, and in some cases the issue of providing live prey governed under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

The health risk of salmonella would need to be considered as the bacteria can be passed on from stroking a reptile’s skin. A clear handwashing procedure would need to be incorporated into the daily care of the animals for anyone who came into contact with them. Some reptile specialists suggest that reptiles are unsuitable pets for families with babies and small children.
